Tonsillectomy and the environment

Reviewed by Badr Eldin Mostafa

The authors compared the carbon footprint of various techniques used for subtotal tonsillectomy. The techniques included radiofrequency ablation, coblation and cold steel with bipolar diathermy. All medical equipment was reported and their carbon emissions in eCO₂ calculated. Cold steel with bipolar diathermy and radiofrequency surgery emitted less greenhouse gases than coblation. In the absence of a significant advantage or specific indications, surgeons should opt for techniques which are more environmentally friendly.
